Proudly blogging about Strictly Come Dancing ALL YEAR ROUND since 2006. Always spoiler-free.
Well, the lovely people at Boots sent me a couple of the products to try for myself.
First up, the Strictly Fab-u-lous Lip Gloss Collection.
There are three lip glosses, all in cute flip-top 'glitterballs'. One is almost clear white, which gives your lips a hit of glitter. There is a nude one which Claudia would be proud of, and a red for a nighttime look. I usually don't like lip gloss because I find it too sticky, but this go on really smoothly and feel more like lip balms on your lips. These are great for anyone for a subtle look. I think would be great for younger girls who want a touch of glam, but are not old enough for proper make-up. The glitterball packaging is really nice. They retail for £6. A fab, inexpensive stocking filler.
I also got to test out the Strictly Beautiful Shimmer Collection.
All of the items are themed with a glitterball finish on the top of the pots. The kit consists of two eye shimmers in gold and silver, shimmer beads with a big brush and a lipstick. The eye shimmers are great. They went on pretty well, and have just the right amount of glitter for a nighttime look, without being over the top. The body shimmer bronzer is good, although I found it was better if I removed the plastic over, and picked up the colour straight from the beads. The lipstick happened to be similar to the colour I usually wear, so I liked it. The nice touch is that the lipstick is cut like a glitterball. This pack retails for £18.
Creator of the range, Strictly make-up artist Lisa Armstrong, said of the range: “If you’re a fan of Strictly Come Dancing and want to sizzle on the dancefloor, it’s important to have make-up which sparkles. The collaboration really brings the Strictly magic to life!”
If you thought Erin's Charleston costume was revealing last weekend, you ain't seen nothing yet! Erin has stripped off for this week's Closer magazine.
The Daily Mail published extracts from Erin's interview with the magazine. She explained why she has bared all: "On the whole I'm happy with my body so I enjoyed posing naked and I'm really pleased with the shots. I hope the public like them too - I'm sure the the men who write to me asking me to wear stockings and suspenders on the show will be pleased! When I'm old and wrinkly, I'll look back at my nude photos with pride."
If you embarrass easily, or you're at work, look away now...
Alan Carr has reportedly turned down Strictly Come Dancing more than once.
He told Daily Star: “I don’t think anyone needs to see me in sequins."
Indeed not. Sometimes I like Alan, but a lot of the time I find his humour quite cheap. It's usually based on taking the mickey out of his guests. Not good.
Patsy: "This Is The Most Terrifying Thing I Have Ever Done"
Patsy is really enjoying Strictly, but finds it terrorfying.
She told the Daily Mail: "This is the most terrifying thing I have ever done. Every Saturday night, I turn to Robin and say: “I’ve forgotten the routine”. I stand there frozen before we go out on the dancefloor and I spend the day feeling sick. I’m standing backstage praying to St Jude — the patron saint of hopeless causes — and I can’t believe that people are voting for us. I mean, there are so many better dancers than me on the show. But this is the best thing that could have happened to me. I recommend dancing to any woman who’s been through any kind of crap."
The dancing is obviously doing Patsy the world of good: "It’s always awkward to talk about weight, but I’ve gone down by two dress sizes. The costume designers keep trying to make my dresses shorter, but I’m a mum and people are having dinner — we don’t want to turn them off."
Patsy is looking good, and she must have lost a heap of weight this week during Robin's jive boot camp.
The routines have lead to some akward conversations with her 11 year-old son: "The other night when I got home, Lennon said: “Mummy, you kissed Len and you kissed Robin,” and I had to explain it wasn’t romantic!"
Craig Revel Horwood loves his Strictly gig, but would give it up if it comprimised his day job as a choreographer and director.
He admitted to Wales Online: “Don’t get me wrong, I really like being a judge on Strictly, but my first love and passion is directing and choreography and I will be doing that until the day I die. I like sitting in the dark helping to bring it all together. I do like being a judge, but I still feel very insecure about it and still have not got used to people coming up and talking to me in the street.”
I love Craig. I can't imagine that Strictly would work without him. But then, I thought that about Arlene, too...
Gavin Henson has been preparing for the paso, andThe Mirror dropped by to see how rehearsals were going.
Gavin told the paper: "The dance is all about arrogance and seduction - and I have to wield my power over Katya until she eventually succumbs. At first it was hard to let go, but now I feel relaxed. I hope the judges can see the difference."
His acting coach, who was drafted in to help Gavin develop his acting skills, said: "He has so many elements to remember, including footwork, arm, leg and head movements as well as counting and listening to the rhythm. We played some theatre games and got him to loosen up and understand how his character is just as important as what his feet do. He was great in rehearsal and I hope he puts everything we worked on into practice. If he does, we'll see a brand new, energised and confident Gavin on Saturday night."
I think everyone will be looking for a big improvement from Gavin on Saturday if he wants to stay in the competition.
Kelly Osbourne, who came third on Dancing With The Stars, has laid into Strictly Come Dancing.
She told The Sun: "I'm sorry, but Strictly Come Dancing looks like a budget version of the American show. In America they really go all out with the costumes and here, without wishing to sound disrespectful, it looks like they've just put some odds and ends together."
The Strictly costumes are amazing. And the new set has been a huge success. Everyone loves is and it has really refreshed the programme. What on earth is Kelly talking about?
John Barrowman has signed up for the Strictly Christmas special.
He told The Sun: "I'm ecstatic - I've watched Strictly since the first series. I am looking forward to the challenge as it's so different to any of the dancing I've done in musicals. But more than anything I am so looking forward to the costumes. I can guarantee this - there will be sequins."
I love John, but how can he not loose? He's made a career out of being a triple-threat. Still, he didn't have the ice dancing sewn-up, so who knows? I can't wait to see him.
The Sun reports that Tina and Gavin, who are both recently single, are flirting backstage.
A source told the paper: "They've been flirting like mad behind the scenes and everyone thinks they'd make a great couple. It's no secret that Gavin is gagging for it - he's a red-blooded male after all. Tina is hot so it's no surprise he's interested."
Gavin Henson is hoping to make his peformances have more spark, by getting an acting coach in to help his with his on-floor persona.
He told The Mirror: "Craig Revel Horwood suggested I get acting lessons and the judges always seem to be spot on. Doing something like this is a world away from what I'm used to, but I really want to stay in the competition."
Let's hope it works. Technically, Gavin isn't too bad, but unless he finds something inside, I don't know how much longer he'll last.
It did wonders for Gethin Jones, who only narrowly missed out on a place in the final. Perhaps it will do the same for Gavin.
Pamela Anderson claims that she was all ready to sign for the Strictly Christmas special, but producers pulled the plug, stating that they had decided to use all British talent.
She told the Press Association: "They invited me to come and do their Christmas special but then they changed their mind. They were only going to have the UK stars doing it, but I was dying to do it. I thought it would have been so great. But hopefully I'll get to do it at some point."
Can't say I'm too disappointed about this. I don't think she's a big enough draw for UK viewers. I'd take Fern over Pamela any day.
Ann Widdecombe is reportly dancing the inches, as well as her cares, away during Strictly training.
The Mirror reports that Ann has gone down two dress sizes, although she claims not to have lost any weight.
Erin Boag told the paper: "I love Ann Widdecombe, she's training and losing inches by the week. The scales may not show she has lost weight as when you train fat turns to muscle which weighs more, but she has definitely lost inches. This year's show is tough, even I've lost six pounds and Peter was out buying new trousers at the weekend because he has gone down two belt notches."
It wasn't a shock to anyone who saw Saturday's programme. Peter & Erin were the latest couple voted off Strictly Come Dancing.
Peter said: "I've had a fantastic time, but I'm disappointed for Erin as I didn't dance as good as I could have. I'm going to miss the spirit amongst the competitors – it's been great. I won't miss the judges obviously! I've been taught by the best in the business."
Meanwhile, Peter claims Erin's revealing outfit put him off. Erin told The Sun: "Peter was gutted to be out. He told me, 'The reason I messed up the routine was those suspenders you were wearing'. He said he couldn't concentrate on the dancing because of them."
I was really surprised to see Michelle in the bottom two, though. I thought with the stress of changing partner, as well as the 'Ian effect', the public to pick up their phones for her this week.
Michelle, Gavin and Ann will all have to pull out all the stops this week.
I was really excited about this week. I loved the charleston routines last year, and tango is my favourite ballroom dance. But I'm afraid to say I was pretty underwhelmed with most of last night's performances. For many of the couples, they put in their best performances, but few were really outstanding.
The charleston was clearly Jimi's dance. He was able to let his personality shine through, without worrying quite so much about the technical side of things. I thought it was Jimi & Flavia's best dance so far. It was cheeky and fun. I only noticed one small fault where a hand grab was a bit messy. Frankly, I'm not sure why they ended up so far down the leaderboard. I think they were under marked.
Scott &Natalie's tango was another strong one. The routine had great musicality, which Scott presented well. There was lots of light and shade. The out of hold sections had nods to paso doble. Scott has great drive, and leads Natalie very well. Scott is yet to do any proper latin (salsa doesn't count in my mind), so I'll be intrigued to see how he gets on. Will he be able to master the hip action?
Tina made a solid return to the dancefloor. Her timing was improved this week, with only one noticeable error. I have to agree with the judges that the charleston was Tina & Jared's best dance so far. I really liked the cartwheel section. I'd really like to see them come out and do a routine that is not 'cute'. I can't wait to see them do a dance with some fire.
I loved the open and close of Felicity &Vincent's tango. They are such a pleasure to watch. Felicity needs to be sharper on the staccato sections. Her acting was very good, as you would expect. But her dancing needed more drive and attack. Everything was a bit light.
Patsy & Robin looked as well rehearsed as they all series. I have to agree with Craig that the charleston lost energy as it progressed. There were a couple of small errors, but she looked confident. Patsy's facial expressions were great. Easily Patsy's best dance so far.
All week Gavin was saying that he thought the tango was his dance. Oh dear. I've seen more drive in a pushbike than was present in Gavin's tango. Gavin's performance had little passion, just occasional flickers when he was out of hold. On the technical side, he doesn't stride out enough. His steps are too small. Katya's choreography was the right standard for Gavin, he just didn't pull it off. He has to find his inner passion for dance.
The charleston was totally Erin's dance. It's such a shame it wasn't Peter's. There were timing issues all over the shop. He tried really hard, and seems to be having a great time. It's such a shame his ability doesn't match his desire. Total dad dancing.
Is there anything Pamela Stephenson cannot do? Yet another great performance. Her tango had lost of passion and great musical interpretation. She raised her shoulders a little, and that's probably the first criticism anyone has been able to make so far. James was excited to be able to dance the tango for the first time on Strictly. A great routine. No tricks. Just tango.
I've complained about Matt &Aliona's repeated use of tricks and props in the past, but somehow it totally worked in the charleston. He rode a unicycle. That's impressive. Dance wise, I really enjoyed it. There was one small timing issue and a slip, but few couples escaped without timining issues last night. Matt's performance was excellent as usual, with great facial expressions. The cartwheel section was especially impressive. Aliona is a brave woman.
It must have been a challenging week for Michelle having to switch partners, but for tango she couldn't have been in safer hands than Ian. Ian managed to get Michelle's long limbs under control. Michelle looks more comfortable in hold, and ballroom is definitely her stronger suit. However, she still looks unstable. She looked a little skippy in places. She could do with spotting more on the turns, but her head turns on the staccato sections we good. A bit of a mixed bag.
Kara &Artem's charleston was very slick. The slickest dance of the night with no errors. The lifts were great. Her dancing was faultless. I thought she showed a cheeky side, although perhaps a few more facial expressions would have put the icing on the cake. I loved it.
Last week I suggested that Anton should use more smoke and mirrors, and not get straight on with the dancing. Tricks don't get any bigger than having Ann enter via a wire. The comedy approach is definitely the was for them to go, and I ended up enjoying their tango more than Gavin's. Which of course makes me feel dirty and ashamed. The opening and close was fun. However, the dancing in the middle was not good. Ann walked and skipped after Anton throughout the routine. Her technique is dreadful.
Pamela once again is my favourite, followed closely by Kara this week. My bottom two would probably be Ann and Peter, saying goodbye to Peter. I enjoyed both of their performances more than Gavin's, but I would keep Gavin because at least he was dancing. It wasn't very interesting, but it was dancing. I suspect that either Peter or Gavin will leave tonight.
Len Goodman has been given his own three-part programme on BBC Radio 2.
Entitled Len Goodman's Dancing Years, Len will play the music he has enjoyed dancing to, from his boyhood through to Strictly. The first show will focus on ballroom music, the second on latin and the third will be across all genres.
Len told NewsOnNews.net: "I'm thrilled to be hosting my own radio show on a subject I feel so passionate about. I know my toes will be tapping in the studio when I play some of these dance greats and hope that listeners will also get their dancing shoes on in their living rooms when they hear the show!"
It seems that Ann Widdecombe is a bit of a Madeley. She revealed to the Daily Telegraph that she turned down Strictly six times before finally agreeing.
She finally agreed after inserting lots of clauses into her contract: “One, I wouldn’t wear anything I considered to be immodest. Two, I wouldn’t make any movements I thought to be immodest. Otherwise, I’d have been worrying all the time: Am I decent? Am I decent? It’s not worth it.”
Ann promises to stay in the competition as long as the public keeps voting: “I am not a walker. I shall try my best every week and stay for as long as the public want me.”
Tom Chambers has been speaking out about Strictly Come Dancing, suggesting that all the contestants secretly hate each other off camera.
However, the comments published in The Sun were made during an interview Tom gave to comedian Scott Capurro at the Royal Vauxhall Tavern. So I think it's fair to say that the comments may have been a little tonge-in-cheek.
Tom told the crowd: "When you appear on Strictly Come Dancing everything feels so fake. They tell you that you have to keep smiling the whole time when everyone's talking to Tess after they've performed. The producers would say if you look grumpy in the background 'People might vote you off for looking like you're not loving it all as much as you should'. Everyone on Strictly pretends to be friends, but we're all really competitive. I only ever pretended to be friends with Austin Healey because everyone wants to think of us as friends. But I'd take him out given the chance!"
He also commented on being part of the arena tour: "It was five months of hell. Five months of grinning like a fool and dancing like some kind of performing monkey, night after night, all across the country. But people seemed to like it. I guess that's what it's all about."
Five months? Methinks Tom was perhaps exagerating. And perhaps someone who hasn't had much other work on since shouldn't complain about the programme that made him a household name.
Strictly could be lining up gay celebrities to dance with a professional of the same sex.
The Daily Star reports that Strictly producers are considering the move, which has already been implemented on the Israeli version of the programme.
A source told the paper: “I don’t think this is a question of if, it is when. We’ll just have to keep our fingers crossed that the viewers will support it.”
Same-sex dancing is a growing scene, and I think it would be a great step forward, as long as the same-sex couples are treated in the same way as the mixed couples. However, will middle England be happy to see it as a part of Strictly? My cynical side thinks that the best we can hope for is a show on BBC Three (like Dancing On Wheels). I would hate for a same-sex couple to become a novelty act on the programme. They should be treated in the same way as everyone else.
Arlene Phillips has been giving her Strictly scores and comments to The Sun.
She placed Pamela and Scott joint top of her leaderboard, each with eight points.
Of Pamela, she said: "I thought she was sensational. She has feet you could worship The way she uses them is amazing. And she is incredible with her hips, too - using them subtly but triumphantly. It was just a sensational performance."
And on Scott: "Scandalous, sizzling Scott. He has swing, sway, speed and spectacle. Dancing to The Jungle Book they were like animals. Stunning. A serious contender. Ultimately it is about the partnership - and everything about them works together."
The facination with Kara & Artem is showing no signs of going away.
The Daily Mail has some sexy pics of Kara, Tina and Michelle from this week's Look magazine, as well as some quotes from them.
Kara says of her partner: "On the first show, he did this glide over to me and it left me a bit flustered, I must admit. I did think I was the luckiest contestant to get Artem. He’s gorgeous in every way and his accent is pretty nice – he has a lovely voice to go with it. I couldn’t really have asked for more."
Kara remains coy about their relationship: "It’s a little bit early for all that. I mean, we’re spending so much time together but we’ve only known each other for a month, so it’s early days yet, but we are getting on very well. It’s quite a tease to end up with him, isn’t it? But we are having a nice time, that’s all I’ll say."
While Michelle reveals who she's been getting to know on set: "I’ve become great friends with Patsy. There’s something about her spirit that we just connected. She is somebody I can see myself keeping in touch with. I also told Ann I wanted to set her up on a blind date, but she said: ‘No, I want to live out the rest of my years in peace.'"
Perhaps unsurprisingly, Paul was the second celebrity voted off Strictly Come Dancing.
Upon elimination, he said: "I've had a wonderful time on Strictly Come Dancing, I really have. If I hadn't had a good time, I'd tell you!"
I think Paul got a really hard time from lots of people. I still cannot really understand why he was so unpopular. Yes, his setiments are sometimes a bit old fashioned, but I don't think anything he said or did was especially offensive or inappropriate.
I thought his dancing was OK. He wasn't the greatest dancer, but he gave it a good go, and we've seen worse over the years.
However, of the bottom two he was certainly the right choice to go.
With Tina & Jared out becuase of the pox, there are only 12 dancers to watch and rate this week. Let's start at the beginning...
Kara & Artem gave another great performance. Kara is very talented and gives lots of performance. She uses her face really well. Artem's routines are good and enjoyable, but yet again I wish it actually had a bit more quickstep content. Occationally the pair weren't in perfect harmony, mainly becuase of the speed of the routine. It was a very quick quickstep.
Felicity & Vincent have great chemistry, it's a lovely partnership. Vincent made the most of Felicity's talent for backbends, incorperating lots of them into the rumba routine. I especially liked the double backbend at the end of the number. Felicity needs to watch her extremities - she must point her feet and make sure her hands are an extention of her arms.
Patsy &Robin's quickstep was quite frantic. I have to agree with the judges that the routine was a little fast and gallopy in places. Patsy's performance has really improved, though. She needs to use her head where appropriate when she's in hold, because she uses it really well when she's not. Perhaps if the routines were a little less packed, Patsy might have the chance to really sell it, instead of just trying to keep up.
I know a lot of people don't like Paul, but I thought Paul & Ola's rumba was very cute. It was a great job by Ola to choreograph a slow, sweet routine. Yes, it was clear that Ola was leadning Paul rather than the other way around, and Paul needs to watch his arm placement. But he got from one end to the other and his timing is sound.
Matt &Aliona's routine had a bit more quickstep than some of the others, which was a good start. Matt seemed to relax about halfway through, after the section out of hold. Maybe he was over a bit that was giving him trouble, maybe he was relieved that he was on the home stretch. But he needs to deliver that relaxed feel throughout the routine, and needs to show the audience that he's having fun. He was able to keep up with a very fast routine. I'm just glad that Len said that he doesn't need tricks - I just hope Aliona takes than on board.
Gavin really needs to sell the routines more. His dancing isn't bad, but he doesn't have any personality on the floor. The whole rumba was all a bit careful. Perhaps Katya needs to get him to an acting coach. Or mabe he needs to see a therapist to get in touch with his emotions. His hip action was pretty good, and for a man his hands were pretty well placed. He just needs to let go.
It was wonderful to see Scott & Natalie come out and do a proper quickstep. It was evident that Natalie is a ballroom specialist. The routine was packed with steps without being too fast. Scott did a great job. As I noted in week 1, he needs to watch that he doesn't lead with his left arm, but that's being really picky. It was a brilliant performance. Light, bouncy and fleet footed.
Michelle sometimes makes some beautiful shapes, but the transitions are clunky and akward. Michelle & Brendan seem to get on well, but for me they lack chemistry on the floor. Everything is nice, but not passionate. Michelle works hard, but perhaps she is trying to hard. She's forcing the movements, instead of just feeling them. Assuming she goes through, I wonder how the change of partner will affect Michelle.
Peter was back in the ballroom hold, and looked far more relaxed than he did in the waltz. It was a big improvement, and one that should keep him in the competition. Erin's routine proved that quicksteps don't have to be frantic to be effective. It was paced perfectly for Peter. They did a good job, and it was a pleasure to watch. Peter looked like he was having fun.
Jimi is almost there, but not quite. His movements can be a little jerky and lacking in fluidity. He also needs to watch his hands. Jimi & Flavia make a great partnership. The mood and feel of the rumba was good. I loved the ending of the routine. Jimi is very comfortable on the floor, both in hold and out of it. I think he will slowly improve in the background, and one of these weeks he's going to floor everyone.
Anton needs to use smoke and mirrors. He's too old school for his own good, getting into hold quite quickly with Ann. While Matt doesn't need any tricks, Ann needs all the help she can get! Ann was moving her feet all the time, but it wasn't all in time. It was more luck than judgement, as my mum would say. Personally, while I find Ann a very entertaining woman, I don't find her dancing very entertaining.
Pamela & James put in another stunning performance. It was so sexy and sensual, full of yearning. Pamela has beautiful hips and arms. Her turns are grogeous and they have great chemistry. James is the rumba king, having put together stunning routines for Cherie and Zoe. Pamela is delicious, and I can't wait to see her performances each week.
Pamela & James were easily my favourites this week, closely followed by Scott & Natalie. Ann & Anton are my least favourite, and with them in my bottom two is probably Paul & Ola, but only because Paul cannot remember thr routines. Sadly, I suspect that it will be Paul who will be packing up his box of tricks tonight.
Ann and Patsy have reportedly formed an unlikely friendship.
The Mail On Sunday reports that the pair, who are both Catholic, even pray before each show to St. Jude - patron saint of lost causes.
A source told the paper: "They got on really well from the off. Patsy really liked the way Ann was no-nonsense. When they first met, Ann told Patsy that she was coming out of her dress a bit and said she had told the producers she wasn’t wearing anything revealing. Patsy didn’t have the heart to say she was in her own clothes."
Brendan Cole performed last night just hours after being informed that his father had passed away.
A source told the Daily Mail: "Brendan is incredibly disciplined and always professional, so he went out on the dancefloor on Saturday night. He didn’t tell any of the contestants, I think he was just in a state of shock. His father had been ill for quite a while, but Brendan is of course, devastated."
A Strictly Come Dancing spokesperson said: "Brendan Cole's father has passed away and Brendan has gone back to New Zealand to be with his family. Michelle Williams will continue on Strictly Come Dancing and will be partnered with Ian Waite for this weeks show until Brendan returns the following week. Our thoughts are with Brendan and his family."
My thoughts also go to Brendan at this difficult time.
Bruce Forsyth has revealed that Simon Cowell's mum is a big Strictly Come Dancing fan.
He told The Mirror: "Simon Cowell's mother came up to me and my wife in Selfridges, introduced herself and was very nice. She said, 'I love the show, I'm a fan and I watch every week', and all that sort of thing about how much she enjoyed our Saturday night show. She couldn't have been more pleasant. She was a very nice lady actually."
Simon Cowell is a smart man. Now we know where he gets it!
Fern Britton has reportedly signed up to appear on the Strictly Come Dancing Christmas special.
A source told The Sun: "Fern's really excited about taking part and is watching the current series for inspiration. She says she'll be nervous when it comes to facing the judges. The Strictly bosses are really happy she's signed up, too. They know viewers want to see what she'll look like in the typical Strictly frocks now she's lost all that weight. There's no way of knowing yet if she'll be up to scratch in the Latin and ballroom numbers - but she did very well in Let's Dance!"
I think this is good news, but it's a real shame she didn't sign up for the regular series. She'd be great.
If you need a reminder, here is her performance on Let's Dance For Comic Relief in 2009...
Michelle loves the costumes on Strictly so much that she'd like to have the show's designers make her a wedding gown... one day.
She told The Sun: "I love the clothes on Strictly. The company who make them do amazing dresses. I told them, 'One day you'll have to make my wedding dress' - and I'm not even engaged. I would love to take inspiration from my Strictly outfits to make it. I'd have a dress which would really reflect me and my personality. Just walking into where the dresses are made and seeing all the Swarovski crystals and fabrics, it's just so beautiful. My dress for the foxtrot, I loved it."
I's settle for just wearing a Strictly-style dress someday. Ann's might actually fit me...
Christmas is coming. I know you've noticed it too.
I picked up a copy of the Boots Christmas Gift Guide today (an annual guilty pleasure), and discovered that while I may never have the body of a Strictly pro, I might now at least be able to have their face.
Boots have launched a Strictly Come Dancing make-up range. The range, called Strictly Fab-U-Lous (what else?), has everything you might need for a sparkly Saturday night.
There is something for every budget, with a lip gloss set for just £6 up to a complete cosmetics case for £45.
The range was developed with the help of Strictly's make-up guru, Lisa Armstrong and some of the kits have a booklet to explain how to achieve that perfect dancefloor look. And Strictly lovlies Ola and Lilia appear on the packaging of some items.
I've always fancied a Strictly make-over (like they do in women's magazines or on This Morning), but maybe now I can have a go for myself...
Bruce Forsyth has been impressed with this year's line-up so far.
He told the Daily Telegraph: "We have got a much better line-up of people so I'm sure the series is going to do well. This year they are better characters, interesting people, and just Ann Widdecombe alone is absolutely wondeful. There are some great dancers and it is amazing how after three weeks of training how much they can improve and in the next month how they can improve again. Everyone should be able to do it. Dancing is a natural thing if you think about it and if you can walk you can dance. Mind you some people can't walk properly."
Everyone should be able to dance, but the beauty of Strictly is that every year they manage to find celebrities that can't!
Brian Capron was first out of Strictly Series 5 because he was ill.
Well not quite, but he claims that he had a bout of flu, and it meant he had difficulty remembering the steps.
He told What's On Stage: "The funny thing is it did do me a lot of good, because I did fail quite miserably and it was quite humiliating, horrible and embarrassing!.. It's a question of remembering things, and on Strictly I was actually quite ill- I had the really horrible flu that was going round- and I just about got through the first part OK and then lost it in the dance off."
He should have been on this series. At least he could have done two dances and given him a chance to do better.
Tina has had to withdraw from Saturday's programme because she has been struck down with chicken pox.
The Daily Mail reports that everyone on the show is being monitored for signs of the virus.
The rules of the show allow her to have a bye for one week. If she fails to perform for a second week, she will be eliminated, just like Jade Johnson last year.
Tina told the paper: "I am devastated. I was so looking forward to this week's show. Jared and I have spent so much time and effort on a really fantastic routine and I just couldn't wait to perform it on Saturday. Hopefully I will bounce back quickly and be on top dancing form soon, ready to come back straight into the next routine. I will be watching them all this weekend."
Natalie has moved in with Scott Maslen... and his wife.
They made the decision to allow Scott & Natalie more time to train during Scott's busy EastEnders shooting schedule.
Scott told Now magazine that it's all above board: "I didn't go into the job to meet someone and have an affair - I went on to learn to dance. I have a real issue with people being unfaithful."
Ann has vowed to dance on, despite losing her brother Malcolm to cancer on Tuesday.
The Daily Mail reports that Ann learned the news while in training with Anton.
A source told the paper: "Ann is being a stoic. The producers told her that, of course, she should miss this week’s show. But one of Malcolm’s last acts of consciousness was to turn to the TV screen and laugh fondly at Ann. He loved her performance the week before. His wife, Meryl, and his children very much want Ann to continue to do the show."
My condolences go to Ann and her family at this difficult time. Throughout my life, I have found that dancing is a great way to ease your sadness for just a short while. I hope Ann finds similar comfort.
Ola Jordan is concerned about her stretch marks and cellulite like everyone else, and would consider cosmetic surgery in the future if she felt she needed it.
The Daily Mail quotes an interview she has given to Closer magazine in which she makes the revelations: "I've never been overweight and I feel comfortable at the weight I am, but I always think I can be more toned. Don't we all? I can't eat whatever I want just because of all the exercise I do. I have a big appetite and can eat for England. I don't want to be the person who goes for dinner with friends and just eats a boring salad. My cellulite's not too bad, but I definitely have it, and it's the same with stretch marks. Fake tan makes everything look better, and we get sprayed every week before the show, which helps."
OK, I'm off for a fake tan...
On surgery she says: "I'd never say no. You should do whatever makes you happy. If I have kids - which I'd like to in the future - and my boobs go down to my knees, I’ll have surgery."
Peter Andre: "I'd Love To Do Something Like Strictly"
Peter Andre has admitted that he'd like to take part in Strictly Come Dancing, but is too busy at the moment.
Peter's name has been linked with Strictly on several occations in the past.
STV reports that he is open minded about the show: "I'd love to do something like Strictly..., but the problem is I'm so full on with everything and there's so much commitment with a show like that, and right now I'm happy to say I haven't got the time. But I would never rule it out of my future, no way."
If the number of people who tured out to see him at my local branch of The Perfume Shop the other week is anything to go by, he'd be a very popular participant.
Goldie has admitted that he was a bit shocked to be the first to leave Strictly Come Dancing.
He told The Mirror: "It's water off a duck's back. Coming middle of the leaderboard you think you're safe, but it's a dangerous place to be. To win you have to be either really good, or hilarious. I was a bit shocked, to be honest - Kristina doesn't deserve it."
Meanwhile, the Daily Star reports that Goldie was angry and feels that the show is not about the quality of the participants' dancing: “This is meant to be a dance competition but it seems it’s more about entertainment. If I had wanted to join that gang, then I could have fallen down the stairs or ripped off Kristina’s dress. But I didn’t want to do that. I like a laugh behind the scenes and might put fake dog poo on the dance floor in rehearsals, but on the live show it’s about the dance and the contest. To go out this early and with those good comments is harsh. But I’d been warned that being a good dancer isn’t enough in this show. I think if there had been a dance-off, the judges would have saved me. I probably didn’t get many votes because my fans don’t watch Strictly.”
I was quite surprised to see Goldie go, since I was convinced that Peter would be leaving the competition.
I think Goldie had more to give, but obviously the public weren't bothered enough about him to save him. Or maybe, like me, they presumed he'd be safe. The lesson, as always, is that no-one is safe.
On being eliminated, Goldie said: "It’s alright. I’ve had a great time and been superfit, so I’ll keep that. Kristina is fantastic. It’s been a good experience for me – onwards and upwards.”
I'd like to begin by pointing out that I do not know the result, and will watch the result on BBC One tonight like everyone else.
We got to see all the celebrities have a go last night.
Matt & Aliona kicked off proceedings with the first 'dark' foxtrot of the night (who knew it would turn out half of the foxtrots would be non-traditional?). Matt's execution was excellent, but the chemistry between him and Aliona was not as hot as the dance demanded. I thought that the whole thing was actually more aggressive than sexy. Matt is great, but I didn't enjoy this performance as much as last week's cha cha.
Peter tried so had, but his salsa with Erin was not good. Peter's timing was terrible. He walked around the floor looking constipated. It was great that he had a good time on the floor, because sadly I didn't have a good time watching. He's clearly a ballroom boy.
Tina is a really lovely dancer. Her lines are lovely, but she really needs to watch her timing, which she again lost on more than one occasion during the routine. Unfortunately, while you can teach steps, and to an extent you can teach performance, but it's almost impossible to teach timing. Tina does have a foundation to build on. Her turns were lovely (although they'd be even better if she spotted). I was a little worried when Jared talked about rise and fall in the foxtrot - it actually glides, Jared.
Patsy &Robin's lack of training really showed. I loved Patsy's attitude. She gave it everything. With more time spent on training, she could be miles better, and hopefully now her filming is over she'll have more time to devote to training. She needs more control in her arms and legs, but I'm sure it will come with practice.
I thought Paul & Ola did a nice job. I found their routine actually quite charming. It was a nice routine with some lovely musicality. There is lots for them to work on, of course, but they have a good base.
Scott & Natalie did a really nice job. It was the first salsa of the night to get the party going. Scott has the right amount of abandon and control. The routine had great energy and timing. Scott just needs to watch what he does with his hands on the shimmys. I shall say no more than that...
Michelle &Brendan's routine was total Hollywood glamour. If there's one thing that Brendan does well, it's these kind of routines. As Bruno mentioned, Michelle really needs to watch her shoulders and try to keep them down. This was a much more controlled performance, and Michelle did so much better than last week.
I liked Goldie's performance. His timing is nice, and he's so cool. Kristina's routine totally suited him. Jazz was the perfect style for him. His work does need to be cleaner, like like many of the others, he has a good base to build on.
Pamela & James were totally amazing. The complex salsa routine was well executed. Pamela proved that she can do ballroom and latin. The way to win Strictly is to be an all-rounder. Pamela was sensational.
Felicity & Vincent turned in a competent foxtrot performance. It didn't blow me away. As Len said, it was OK. Felicity needs to point her toes more, especially when she has an attitude leg line. I expect there are more exciting things to come from Felicity.
Ann & Anton did possibly one of the worst Strictly dances ever. They are good sports. They certainly played it for laughs rather than even attempting a proper salsa. It was all tomato and no chili. They really shouldn't be able to continue.
Kara & Artem did a lovely job. Kara has beautiful footwork. The routine had a lot more content than last week. A good job overall.
Gavin had timing issues even before he messed it up. I disagree with Craig - I think Gavin does have decent hip action. But the performance just wasn't there. I agree with Bruno that the whole thing was just a bit self-conscious. Somehow Katya has to get him to let go and go for it. Pulling up his shirt is not enough.
I really enjoyed Jimi &Flavia's foxtrot. I'm not really sure what Jimi was doing with his face. His scary grin really didn't work for me. But his technique is excellent. Like Pamela, he appears to be an all-rounder.
Pamela was by far the best this week, and deserved to be top of the leader board.
My bottom two would be Ann & Anton and Peter & Erin. I think Ann should be the one to go, but I have a feeling that it will be Peter who has to go for an early bath.
The Observer has been chatting to Alesha, and they asked who she thinks will do well this series. She said: "There's a few I really like. There's more people with potential this year than last year – Pamela looks fabulous, Scott, Kara and Matt."
And what does she think of Ann?: "I don't think Ann Widdecombe can win the show, but she's a better dancer than people give her credit for. She does a good job; she's added great value to the show, she's funny, witty and she doesn't take any of it too seriously."
Jimi has revealed that doing sexy scenes in The Guru has helped him get dirty on the dancefloor. He told The Sun: "Doing sex scenes in The Guru helped me feel at ease with the raunchier Strictly moves. I'm lucky to have been an actor and have had that experience. Peter Shilton won't have been used to many clinches on the football field!"
Why is it that so many of Strictly's soap stars have been filming difficult final scenes while training for the show?
Sarah Manners and Matt Di Angelo both had some difficult final scenes to film during training, and now it's Patsy who is having a tough time.
The Sun quotes an interview Patsy gave to This Morning: "If I get through this weekend then that would be great - but I think I'll be going home. Last week I had no training time whatsoever before the first live show - I'd had ten days prior to that."
Peter Shilton says he is not ready to leave the competition, despite being the bookies' favourite to leave.
Peter told The Mirror: "I don't take a lot of notice of odds. Somebody has to be voted off, but I don't want it to be me. I want to progress from here, like Chris Hollins, who had a slow start last year. I'm sure if I stay in the competition there is more I can do on the dancefloor. It's been hard work training four or five hours a day. I think in the first week I went into goalkeeping mode. My technique was not too bad, but I need to move on from there."
Could Kara & Artem be the next Ali & Brian Joe & Kristina?
Kara told The Mirror that it's early days, but did not deny an attraction: "We've only known each other a month so it is a bit early days for that. We are spending a lot of time together. Artem is a very kind person, he is brilliant and we are getting on really well. Will we go on a date when the show ends? We'll have to wait and see. At the moment I just have to concentrate on the dance moves - they are harder than I thought. I don't know if Artem fancies me, you'll have to ask him. There is nothing but the dance moves in my mind at the moment."
I'm sure Artem does fancy Kara. Who wouldn't?
However, Kara is more concerned with keeping her feet firmly on the ground after last week's little slip: "My main worry now is that I will become 'the falling over girl' every week. Fingers crossed that won't happen. It's funny, when something like that happens the fall becomes the focus and you can't really think about anything else. I always fall over because I am quite a wobbly person and then my heel got caught in my skirt."
Don't worry, Kara. It's won't happen again. And it wasn't funny, so it won't get repeated again and again. Besides, It happens to the pros too. Ian Waite has slipped in a routine (his showdance with Zoe) and has slipped walking down the stairs.
It's time for Tess to put her hat back into its box. Strictly lovebirds Ali Bastian and Brian Fortuna have called time on their relationship.
A source told the Daily Mail: "The love affair is sadly all over, but Brian and Ali remain amicable and will continue to be friends. She is off soon to a luxury retreat on Jamaica with some friends to mend her broken heart."
Gavin Henson is very envious of all the support that Paul Daniels has been getting from members of the public.
A source told the Daily Star: “Gavin has been having a right old moan, saying Paul’s been inundated with letters. Paul might be 44 years older than Gavin, but he’s going to give him a run for his money. Gavin is really competitive. He’s a sportsman. It’s built into him, so naturally he’s hacked off that Paul’s fan sack is bulging.”
The source continued: “Everyone thinks it’s hilarious that Gavin’s getting his knickers in a twist. He’s been getting his chest out at every opportunity and expected to have female fans queueing up. Everyone thought Scott Maslen would be his big competition in the heart-throb stakes. But Paul’s been a star for years and he is determined to show the younger guys he still has what it takes. At this rate he could be the dark horse of this year’s show.”
Tina has been chatting to What's On TV about being a part of Strictly.
She admits that she didn't bother getting in shape before the series began: "I've done nothing! I keep overeating and then saying: 'Oh, it's all right, I'm doing Strictly.' The female pro-dancers have got fantastic figures and you think: 'Wow, if that's what dancing does, sign me up for four hours training!'"
Of course, Tina is excited about the costumes: "I love the outfits! The seven-year-old in me is in heaven right now. The dresses always look so magical on TV, so I'm really enjoying wearing them. I hope I can sneak one home!"
Gavin Henson has been watching the others rehearse to try and get some tips. But he may have made himself unpopular.
New! magazine reports that a source told the Daily Star: "Like any sportsman, Gavin is very competitive and after getting praise from the judges it's gone to his head. He thinks he's a pro now. He's been watching the others rehearse and been judging them and trying to give them tips. And he even cheekily told one girl: 'Dancing is only half the battle. If you look like me you have already won lots of votes.' She told the others about it and no-one could believe his arrogance. Everyone's blanking him right now."
Like everyone, she is speculating about who will leave this week, but she thinks Ann will survive: "It's hard to predict who will be safe this week as it's up to the public who will warm their hearts. I definitely think Ann will go through, as she is so entertaining. She is proving that anyone can do it, anyone can dance. And as for who will be at risk this week...anyone! This year's competition is different, so we will need to see how Saturday pans out."
You might not have Michelle Williams' moves on the dancefloor, but you can look like her.
OK! magazine have revealed that her sexy crop top was an M&S special - costing just £18.
Actually, the OK! article implies that they have found a lookie-likey, but comparing those photos, I'm pretty sure that Michelle is wearing the M&S top.
Ann has been jet propelled around the dance floor - literally.
According to The Sun, a mixture of energy providing high-fibre foods and engaging the stomach muscles has lead to Ann breaking wind a lot during training.
A source told the paper: "Ann has been literally twirling like the wind during rehearsals. She has been doing rather a lot of trumping while spinning around. She's got such a good sense of humour and either ignores it or laughs it off. Those new to exercise or professional dancing do break wind more than usual because it engages their core for the first time."
Peter Shilton says that partner Erin is a great team manager, just like Brian Clough.
He told The Sun: "I'd put her up there with some of the best managers I've had, like Sir Alf Ramsey, Bobby Robson and Brian Clough. We've got a good relationship. I'll have some input, but I know she's the boss. That's what some of my good managers were like."
He also explained that dancing goes against his goalkeeping instincts: "Dancing contradicts what I was told in football. When I was a goalie I had to keep compact and crouched with my knees bent and my fingers wide apart. But with Strictly you've got to spread out wide and keep your fingers closed. It goes against anything I've been told, apart from maybe a bit of quick footwork."
There have been cries of 'unfair advantage' surrounding Matt Baker for a while. Matt was a champion gymnast in his youth, and was also a professional dancer in a stage show.
Now it has come to light that he also took part in an amateur latin dance competition during his time on Blue Peter. Alongside co-presenter Zoe Salmon, he learned a paso and a jive, and performed in front of Darren & Lilia.
A Strictly spokesperson told The Sun: "He spent less than 20 hours, more than five years ago, learning the Jive and Paso Doble. He didn't dance with a professional partner nor was he choreographed by a Strictly professional."
Kara reportedly had her Strictly training delayed because of her Sport Relief experience. Perhaps Matt should be benched for a while too...
Gavin & Katya have agreed that he should remain single while on the show, so that he can focus on the competition.
Katya told the News Of The World: "Gavin is not allowed to date while he is in the competition - he needs to be completely focused on dancing. I told him I would prefer it for him not to and he agreed it's a good idea to be single so he can devote time to Strictly. So, right now I am the only woman in his life. And as for rumours of anything going on between us - they're just that... rumours."
Katya is keen to make it clear that there will never be anything between her and Gavin: "Having dinner together is me getting to know my partner. It's not romantic, it's just having dinner - food is very important to Gavin. And chemistry is very important for a professional to get from their celeb partner, because dancing is all about two people making good chemistry together on the dance floor. They say as long as there is chemistry on the floor there's no chemistry off the floor. I'm competitive and I'd rather keep it on the dance floor. Don't get me wrong, Gavin is a wicked guy and I like him very much. He is quite a handsome man - and he's not bad to look at for eight hours a day. But I just don't see him that way. I'm very much in love with my lovely boyfriend."
In an interview with The Mirror, she admitted that she put on weight during the last series because of too much bacon and not enough training.
She says: "I gained a lot of weight when I was training with Phil. I really got into English breakfasts with him - I didn't realise they had so many calories. And I was eating bacon five times a week. For lunch I would have a sandwich with a packet of crisps and in tthe afternoon, I snacked on Gummi Bear sweets. I wasn't exercising much, either. Phil and I were only training a few hours a day because he had a bad knee."
Training with Gavin is a lot more demanding physically: "It's great training with an athlete like Gavin. He's an amazing rugby player and works very hard. He's aware of certain training techniques and has been showing me some abdominal exercises for muscle definition. We're in the studio by 10am. Gavin's a perfectionist and doesn't stop until he gets his steps right."
I posted my thoughts on the first seven yesterday. If you missed it, read my Saturday Service.
Jimi & Flavia kicked off the show in fine style with their cha cha. Jimi has great rhythm and fast footwork. He looked relaxed and seemed to enjoy it. If his ballroom looks as smooth as his latin, he'll be one to keep an eye on. The only thing that let him down was the awful loose shirt he was wearing. I would've preferred to see him in a more traditional latin shirt.
The Queen of Ballroom managed to whip the goalkeeping legend into decent shape. Peter & Erin's waltz was typical Erin class. Peter's footwork was pretty good, with very clear heel leads (remember when the Strictly judges used to look at footwork?). There is work to be done still, there was gapping between them, and Peter needs to try not to bite his lip in concentration. But I was pleasantly surprised. He looked better than he did on Let's Dance For Sport Relief.
Michelle was all legs. She had bent knees throughout the cha cha and the whole thing was a bit all over the place. Brendan needs to work on Michelle's control. She needs to be so much slicker. That said, Michelle's timing is excellent, so if she can keep her limbs under control, she could do very well.
Gavin kept up the tradition of rugby players on Strictly by putting in a solid waltz performance. Katya's choreography was simple but effective and Gavin looked relaxed and in control. Everything was well placed with good timing.
I found Tina & Jared's cha cha a bit flat. The routine was quite sweet, but wasn't that interesting. I hope there is more to come from Jared. Tina had a few timing issues, and I suspect she'll look better in a ballroom hold when Jared can keep hold of her. But they are a very cute couple.
Ann had the advantage of being in hold with Anton. Speaking from personal experience, I defy anyone to not get from one end of a routine to the other when you are in the Du Beke hold. The performance was far from slick. In fact, it reminded me of a dodgy pro-am, where the amateur dancer has paid a lot of money to perform with a professional dancer. I love Ann, and I'm sure the public will keep her in for a while.
Kara is so hot on the floor. She has so much ability and talent and could be a frontrunner. And she looks amazing, too. It's just a shame that Artem's routine contained so little actual cha cha. We should not have to wait until the chorus before we see some real steps. Kara can clearly cope with some complex routines, so let's see it.
My overall verdict on the start of this series is that there has been too much style over substance, especially from some of Strictly's newer faces. Yes, it's nice to have some glitz and glamour, but Strictly has always been about dancing first and foremost. I would hate for Strictly to abandon that in favour of fluff and props. Imaginative choreography which contains technique and pizazz at the same time is the way to win. Gimmicks will not get you to the final. Most of the waltz numbers were excellent. Some of the cha chas were disappointing in terms of content. Let's not turn Strictly into Dancing With The Stars. British viewers are more discerning. Remember, Strictly Come Dancing was the original that others can only try to emulate. Let's keep it about the dancing.
Here are the videos (I'll post better quality ones when I find them)...
Bruno would like to see David Beckham on Strictly Come Dancing.
Bruno told What's On TV: "Everyone's got their wishlist, and at the top of everybody's list is David Beckham - I'll have him. He moves well across the football field, he kicks a ball pretty well, he's got a great frame and he looks good in a suit so it'll be interesting to see how he does. Victoria's a lovely girl, to be honest, and she's funny. She's cute, but I'd rather have David."
Rumours have been swirling this week that Kara & Artem and more than just dance partners.
The Mirror reports that Kara is 'smitten' with Artem.
A source told the paper: "It was obvious to everyone from the first rehearsal there was a huge spark between them. They look great together and there is loads of chemistry. Most people involved with the show have figured out what's going on by now. They've been really flirty in rehearsals. They are both young, single and attractive so it was probably only a matter of time before something happened. They can barely keep their hands off each other. It's sweet really."
However, Kara told Fabulous magazine that while she thinks Artem is attractive, it's strictly business for now: "He's rather gorgeous, isn't he?. During the launch show, when we were teamed up with our partners for the first time, I got a little bit flustered. I nearly fainted, actually! He's a Russian hunk and really lovely. But we're going to be strictly professional and just learn how to dance."
